Rev'd David Tully, Rector
David was brought up in Newcastle and went to a sleepy local church with his family. Faith became real to him though the Christian Union at his school. He met his wife Christine at university in Durham in the 1970s and they married after they graduated. After teaching geography for 3 years , he went to theological college at Ridley Hall, Cambridge. David was ordained in 1984 and has served in various NE parishes – north and south of the Tyne, before he came to Chester-le-Street in 2009. He was Newcastle United club chaplain for 17 years. David adores playing and watching sport – and he enjoys hill walking. He has 3 grown up children and became a grandfather in 2012.
Rev'd Judith Ashurst, Associate Vicar
Judith was ordained in 2008 and joined the Staff Team at St Mary and St Cuthberts after a curacy in Belmont and Pittington. She has had a very ecumenical church background including United Reformed, Methodist and now Anglican. She was a Methodist Local Preacher and later became a Reader in the Church of England. She did a variety of jobs from banking to counselling before training for ministry. She is married to Colin and they have two daughters. She enjoys spending time with friends, singing in a choral group, being part of a book group and eating out. One of her favourite places, and a frequent holiday destination is the Lake District.
Rev'd Dan Christian, Curate
Dan grew up in the Anglican Church and came to faith as a teenager. He studied theology at Durham University which limited him to two career paths. For this reason he became a teacher for a few years in a school in Buckinghamshire, teaching Religious Studies. After leaving his first career, he trained for ministry at Wycliffe Hall in Oxford specifically focusing on Old Testament studies. He is married to Laura and enjoys playing cricket and football in his spare time. His other loves include films, his guitar and Coventry City football club.
Julie Pike, Family, Children and Youth Worker
Julie has been the Children, Family and Youth worker – no one can get her job title right! – at St. Mary and St. Cuthbert’s since 2008. She became a Christian as a teenager and attended a variety of denominations before finding her home in the Anglican Church. She has had various jobs working with children including being a nursery nurse, play worker and an Early Years practitioner. She enjoys watching movies, shopping, reading, listening to music and quizzes. She has four children and loves spending time with her family, friends and eating chocolate!
Jan Rowland, Church Secretary
Jan has worked in the Parish Office for 8 years, firstly on a part time basis and now full time. She grew up attending the Methodist Church at Esh Winning and became a Christian in her teenage years. After getting married and moving to Chester-le-Street she continued to worship at Esh Winning for a time but when family came along it became a priority to find a church more local with children and youth work. She is married to Malcolm and they have two children, Leanne and Daniel. She attends Parish South and enjoys helping in church children’s activities, spending time with friends and family and cooking.
