The Parish Church of Saint Mary and Saint Cuthbert

Chester-le-Street is a busy market town. It has a single parish with 27,000 population and together with its adjoining area,  is the home of about 60,000 people.

It is in County Durham in North East England and lies about 10 miles south of Newcastle upon Tyne, 10 miles west of Sunderland and 5 miles north of Durham City.

Just to its east is the A1 motorway and the main London to Edinburgh railway passes through the western part.

It has its own railway station with stopping trains and ample bus services.

You will find the ancient Parish Church of Saint Mary and Saint Cuthbert just to the east of the main "Front Street". The Church is recognizable by its tall spire, which can be seen for miles around. There is also a photo of the Church on the "Home" page of the Web Site, to help you find it.

Opposite is The Parish Centre, in Church Chare, which is open most of the time, and you can contact us there if the main church building is closed. There is space for car parking between the two.

(Church opening hours:- Apart from services, from November until Easter, the Church Building will open at 10.00 am and close at 12.30 pm during the week and on Saturdays. From Easter to October  these times are from 10.00am to 3.30pm.  Contact Administration for details.)

Also here in Chester-le-Street are The Anker's House Museum, Roman remains, Lumley Castle and the home of Durham County Cricket Club.

Market days are Tuesdays and Fridays with a flea market on Saturdays.
